What a season it was for the Men’s C Team in 2011, securing the SAASL Division 8 League Championship but also Fulham United’s first senior men’s trophy in 10 years!
Led by super-coach Dom Pinneri, the team had a great start to the season and held on throughout the year to win the title on goal difference from close rivals Para Hills East. The team registered 13 wins, 3 draws and only 2 losses throughout the season scoring an incredible 81 goals.
Despite topping the ladder for most of the season, it all came down to the final game of the year where the team took on local rivals West Beach at home. Fulham United had lost the first game against West Beach however this time all that was needed to secure the title was a draw. West Beach definitely made Fulham United earn the title and held a 2 nil lead going into the final stages of the match. However with 10 minutes to play the boys somehow managed to pull a rabbit out of the hat and produce one of the great comebacks from a Fulham United side.
It looked all over when with the score still at 2 nil to West Beach, Simon Labrosciano gave away a penalty to the away side. However it was brilliantly saved by keeper Ben Caton and direct form the save a counter attack was launched resulting in a goal to Peter Screnci. With only 5 minutes to play Fulham was back in the game at 2-1.
In the dying minutes, Danny Troiano made a run from out wide on the right side into the penalty box where he was brought down and a penalty awarded. Screnci stepped up to put it away and level the scores at 2-2, sending the Fulham United bench and Club President delirious. The boys then held on nervously for what seemed an eternal amount of injury time before the final whistle was blown; the crucial point had been secured and so was the title!
Coach Pinneri is a man of few words and he has already announced his intention to retire from coaching on top. His selections throughout the season proved to be a masterstroke and when the title was won no-one could deny that the whole squad felt a part of the win.
