Round
2 of the Women’s Premier
Cup against Cumberland United
was a must win game for
Fulham United if they wanted
to have a chance to proceed
to the semi finals.
From the
first whistle Fulham looked
to be the goods and early
signs showed it would be
a good match. Cumberland
tried to threaten the Fulham
defensive line, but the
defence were very solid
lead by the direction of
Emma Wirkus between the
sticks. Fulham’s midfield
was very switched on and
able to feed the ball to
the strikers often, but
at the half both teams were
left scoreless.
Halftime:

The second
half was very much dominated
by Fulham who had most of
the attack. Midway through
the half, Tanya Harrison
lined up to take a corner.
The ball was delivered low
and hard towards the front
post where striker Leanne
Gubbins made an excellent
run and was able to use
the outside of her foot
to volley it into the back
of the net. A much deserved
goal for the home side.
Fulham
were solid all over the
park and did not look like
they were going to concede.
A scramble in Cumberland’s
defensive box was almost
another chance for Fulham
to increase their lead,
but some desperate defending
by the away side saw the
ball cleared to safety.
Renee Harrison
almost added to the score
when she was given a great
through ball and only had
the keeper to beat. It took
a fantastic save by Cumberland’s
goal keeper to deny the
opportunity.
Fulltime:
Fulham United 1 –
0 Cumberland United
It was
a great game by all Fulham
players and probably one
of the best performances
by the squad this season.
The girls hope to keep the
winning feeling alive when
they take on Adelaide City
at home in Round 10 of the
league next Sunday at 3pm.
The last clash between these
two sides was a stale mate
with a 1-1 score line.
